The Real Deal

Now, I’m no expert. I have only been married since last June, but it is the greatest thing that I’ve ever experienced, done [am doing], or have been a part of- a part of a marriage. I know, I know, you’re probably thinking that we are still in our “honeymoon” stage, and yes, you are probably right. But to me, those first few months are pivotal. I mean, you have to learn to live with a man, not your brother, not your dad, but another man. A man brought up differently than you were, who has habits that you’ve never experienced, because you’ve never lived with him before. The first few months and years, you [the two of you] begin establishing a life all your own. You, as man and wife get to decide the kind of life you want to lead and the kind of people you want to be. And boy is it an awesome ride! Every day brings new challenges, new ways of doing things, new memories- all that add up to a life!

My husband and I experienced something incredible this past weekend. We had the privilege of celebrating his grandparents’ 60th wedding anniversary. In a world where divorce is prevalent and all around you, you see marriages failing, it is so incredible to know two people who pledged their lives to one another 60 years ago. 60 years is a long time- so many things happen over a period of 60 years- moves, job changes, children, aging, grandchildren, illness, retirement, etc. and they have survived it all. How? Because in 1951, they made a commitment to each other that they would love each other, support each other, love Jesus, and do whatever it takes. They were beaming on Saturday night, as friends and family gathered to celebrate their marriage and their accomplishment. What an amazing blessing it is to see a love like that. That’s the real deal, and we would be wise to take note of the sacrifices and decisions they’ve made and the love they share. Lord willing [that's a prayer] I will get to celebrate 60th years with my sweet husband... I can't wait! - J
